Management Reporting

Your board pack shouldn't be a last-minute panic. We help you build reporting that gives the board what they need to govern, without burying them in data they don't.

The board reporting problems every finance team knows

The 72-hour scramble

Board meeting is Monday. You start the pack Friday. Weekend working is the norm. One wrong number and you're fixing it at 2am Sunday.

"Where did this number come from?"

The board asks a simple question. You can't answer because you've forgotten which spreadsheet feeds which slide. The trail is lost.

60 pages nobody reads

Your pack has grown to include everything. The important signals are lost in noise. Board members skip to the summary you wrote at midnight.

Copy-paste hell

Data lives in spreadsheets. Charts go into PowerPoint. Numbers get retyped. At every step, errors creep in. The process hasn't changed in a decade.

Inconsistent formatting

Every section looks different. Different chart styles, different fonts, different ways of showing variance. The pack looks like five people made it. Because they did.

Key person dependency

Only Sarah knows how to build the pack. When she's on holiday, it doesn't happen. When she leaves, you're starting from scratch.

Board packs that build themselves

We design automated reporting that pulls from your systems, applies consistent formatting, and publishes on schedule. You review and approve; the machines do the grunt work.

1

Understand what the board needs

We interview board members. What do they actually read? What decisions does the pack need to support? Most packs contain 50% noise.

2

Design the architecture

Clear hierarchy of information. Executive summary, key metrics, deep dives. Every number traceable to source. Every chart with a purpose.

3

Build the data layer

Single source of truth for board metrics. No more copy-paste. Numbers flow from source systems automatically.

4

Create templates

Consistent, professional formatting. Charts that update automatically. Commentary templates that prompt for the right narrative.

5

Automate production

Pack builds itself on day 3 after month-end. You spend time analysing and reviewing, not assembling slides.

6

Train your team

Anyone can produce the pack. Knowledge isn't locked in one person's head. Process documentation that actually gets used.

Frequently asked

Do we need to change our pack structure?
Not necessarily. Sometimes the structure is fine but the process is broken. Sometimes both need work. The audit will tell us. We won't change things for the sake of it - boards don't like surprises.
What tools do you use?
It depends on your context. Power BI for data visualisation, automated to PowerPoint or PDF for distribution. Sometimes Excel for the data layer, sometimes a proper planning tool. We use what you'll actually maintain.
How do you handle commentary?
We can't automate insight (yet). But we can automate variance highlighting, create commentary templates that prompt for the right information, and make it easy to input narrative into the right places. The thinking is still human; the formatting isn't.
What about board portals?
If you use Diligent, BoardEffect, or similar, we can publish directly to your portal. If you don't have one, we can advise on whether it's worth the investment for your board size and meeting frequency.
Can you help with investor reporting too?
Yes. PE portfolio reporting, lender compliance packs, investor updates - it's all the same discipline. Consistent data, automated production, professional presentation. We often do board and investor reporting together.
