Vena Solutions | UK EPM Evaluation

Independent evaluation and selection guidance for Vena Solutions. The Excel-native FP&A platform purpose-built for the Microsoft ecosystem.

What is Vena Solutions?

Vena Solutions is an FP&A platform that keeps Excel as its front end while adding a governed OLAP cube back end. Founded in 2011 in Toronto, Vena raised $300M in Series C funding from Vista Equity Partners in 2021. With roughly 700 employees and a London office since 2019, Vena serves over 1,000 customers globally. The platform is available through the Microsoft Marketplace with Azure MACC decrements.

Excel-native interface

Your team keeps working in Excel. Vena adds version control, audit trails, and a central database behind familiar spreadsheets.

OLAP cube engine

Multi-dimensional analysis without the complexity of building custom cubes. Pre-built financial intelligence handles common FP&A calculations.

Microsoft 365 integration

Purpose-built for the Microsoft stack. Teams, SharePoint, Power BI, and Azure Active Directory integration out of the box.

Workflow automation

Approval chains, notifications, and process management replace email-based budgeting cycles.

Vena Copilot

AI chatbot for natural language queries against your financial data. Ask questions, get answers without building reports.

OfficeConnect

Publish reports directly to Word and PowerPoint from your Vena data. Board packs without copy-paste.

Where Vena excels

Excel proficiency rewarded

Teams with strong Excel skills can leverage their expertise rather than learning a new interface from scratch.

Audit trail and governance

Every cell change is tracked. SOX compliance support is built in. Finance teams with regulatory requirements find this valuable.

Close management

Reduce close from weeks to days with task management, reconciliation workflows, and automated journal entries.

Data consolidation

Multi-entity consolidation with intercompany eliminations, currency conversion, and minority interest handling.

Financial reporting

Pre-built financial report templates for P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow. OfficeConnect publishes to Word and PowerPoint.

Vena Academy

Structured certification programme means your team can build internal expertise. Good community and support resources.

Is Vena right for you?

1

Best for

Excel-proficient finance teams in Microsoft-heavy organisations who want governance without abandoning spreadsheets. Particularly strong for companies with 200 to 2,000 employees.

2

At its best when

Your team loves Excel and resists change, you need strong audit trails for SOX or regulatory compliance, and your Microsoft 365 investment is significant.

3

Consider alternatives if

You want a modern non-Excel interface that drives adoption among non-finance users. Or if rapid deployment matters. Vena implementations typically run 3 to 9 months, longer than some newer platforms.

4

Budget reality

First-year costs often exceed £60K when you include implementation alongside licensing. Ongoing licensing runs £30–50K+ per year depending on user count. Worth the investment for the right use case, but not a budget option.

How we help with Vena

Our strength with Vena starts at evaluation. We help you decide whether Vena's Excel-native approach genuinely fits your team's needs, or whether a purpose-built modern platform would deliver better outcomes. If Vena is the right call, we can oversee delivery under the Bolt methodology.

Vena Solutions FAQs

How does Vena compare to Planful?
Both target mid-market finance teams, but they take different approaches. Vena keeps Excel as the interface. Planful has its own web-based UI. If your team is deeply invested in Excel and resistant to change, Vena may drive better adoption. If you want to move away from spreadsheet dependency, Planful offers a cleaner break. Consolidation capabilities are comparable.
How long does Vena implementation take?
Typically 3 to 9 months depending on scope. The Excel-native approach means less UI training but the back-end configuration, data integration, and workflow setup still require significant effort. Budget for 4 to 6 months for a standard FP&A deployment.
What does Vena actually cost?
Vena doesn't publish pricing. Based on market data, expect £30–50K+ per year in licensing depending on user count and modules. Implementation adds £30–50K+ for professional services. First-year total cost of ownership often exceeds £60–80K.
Does Vena work for non-Microsoft organisations?
It works, but you lose the key differentiator. Vena's value proposition is deeply tied to Excel and Microsoft 365 integration. If you're a Google Workspace shop or don't heavily use Excel, you're paying a premium for capabilities you won't fully use. Look at Abacum or Planful instead.
Can Bolt deliver a Vena implementation?
Yes. Our primary strength is evaluation and selection through the Bolt Blueprint, but if Vena is the right platform we can manage the full implementation under our methodology. You get unbiased advice first, then delivery with senior Bolt oversight throughout.
